Curiosity and Engagement: Preparing Young Minds for Kindergarten
An important aspect of our Pre-K Program is ensuring each of our students is prepared for grade school.
“Kindergarten Readiness” refers to a child’s preparedness for the transition into Kindergarten, encompassing a range of skills and abilities such as basic academic knowledge, emotional maturity, social skills, and physical development. It’s about making sure children are equipped to join in, learn, and thrive in the more structured environment of Kindergarten.
For us, engagement is a crucial aspect of Kindergarten Readiness, reflecting how a child participates with the world of learning and exploration. It encompasses a child’s innate curiosity, their capacity to maintain attention, and their willingness to actively participate in varied activities.
A child who is ready for Kindergarten typically displays an eagerness to discover and learn about new things, showing a keen interest in exploring their environment and engaging with new concepts.
Our program understands and supports these attributes to make certain that children are well-prepared and confident as they transition to the more formal learning setting of Kindergarten.
Pre-Kindergarten Learning Goals
Our Huntington Pre-K Program blends nurturing guidance with stimulating activities, preparing your child for Kindergarten and beyond with a rich tapestry of learning experiences. Our program is specially designed to foster holistic development, ensuring each child thrives emotionally, socially, intellectually, and physically in a playful and supportive environment:
Emotional

Pre-K children expand their emotional skills by demonstrating empathy towards peers, forming strong relationships outside the family, expressing a wide range of emotions with appropriate language, taking pride in personal achievements, managing frustrations and disappointments with growing resilience, and developing a sense of independence and self-awareness.
Language
Skills
In Pre-K, children further enhance their language skills by forming complex sentences, engaging in conversations, following multi-step instructions, expanding vocabulary, beginning to recognize simple words in print, and using language for different purposes like asking questions, narrating stories, or explaining ideas.
Problem-Solving
Skills
Pre-K children advance in problem-solving by participating in cooperative play that involves planning and role-playing, identifying patterns, solving more complex puzzles, understanding cause and effect, performing simple mathematical operations like counting and basic addition, and applying logical thinking to everyday situations.
Motor
Skills
In Pre-K, children refine their motor skills by confidently running, jumping, and climbing, showing improved hand–eye coordination, participating in activities like drawing, writing simple letters, using scissors safely, dressing independently, practicing advanced personal hygiene, and handling smaller utensils with dexterity.
Social
Skills
Pre-K children develop socially by engaging in cooperative play, understanding and respecting rules, showing empathy and concern for friends, participating actively in group discussions, demonstrating facility with social cues, and sharing and taking turns with a more developed sense of fairness.

Developing Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem: We encourage children to embrace their strengths, celebrate their accomplishments, and persevere in the face of challenges, fostering a positive self-image and a belief in their abilities.
2. Enhancing Academic Readiness:
Our Pre-Kindergarten program provides a well-rounded academic foundation that prepares children for the expectations of Kindergarten. We prioritize the development of early literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills, ensuring a smooth transition into formal schooling.
Early Literacy Foundations: Children engage in hands-on activities that promote early literacy skills, including letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and beginning reading and writing skills.
Numeracy and Math Concepts: We introduce math concepts through fun and engaging activities, such as counting, sorting, patterning, and basic operations, fostering a love for numbers and problem-solving.
Cognitive Development and Curiosity: We stimulate children’s curiosity and encourage exploration through hands-on learning experiences, fostering critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a love for discovery.

What is the typical class size at The Anne Brower School?
In our Pre-K Program, we prioritize a learning environment where each child receives ample attention and support. To achieve this, we maintain a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:8, ensuring that our educators can provide personalized guidance and care. Each class is made up of no more than 16 students, a size that fosters a close-knit learning community while allowing for individual growth and interaction. This balance helps us support each child’s development in a setting that is both attentive and dynamic, laying a solid foundation for their future learning experiences.
What happened to your Enrichment Programs for the 2024-2025 School Year?
In our continuous effort to provide the most valuable and integrated learning experience for every child, we’ve extended our program hours to incorporate the enriching activities and specialized content from our after-school Enrichment Programs directly into our core curriculum for all students to enjoy.
This means that all the unique benefits of the Enrichment Programs will now be a seamless part of your child’s daily education, ensuring that each day is filled with the maximum level of engagement and learning possible!
What’s the difference between sending my child to preschool vs. daycare?
Choosing between preschool and daycare, such as family child care, often comes down to the specific needs and age of your child. While daycare provides essential care and safety for children of various ages, including school-age children, a preschool offers a more structured educational environment.
In preschool, children are engaged in classes designed to foster early learning and development. These classes are tailored to prepare young minds for school, focusing on cognitive, social, and emotional growth.
Unlike traditional child care settings, preschools provide a curriculum that lays the groundwork for academic skills and nurtures a love for learning, making it a more beneficial choice for early childhood education.
